Depression

Darkness exists

Depression is not something that a simple change in perspective can usually help fix. Depression can make you dwell on your mistakes, see things negatively and go through many dark days. Guilt may be weighing heavy on your heart. But you are not alone.

Even though you may be suffering from depression, we are all in the same situation when it comes to God. We’ve all done things wrong. God can give you hope. God knew we would make mistakes and rebel against Him, and will continue to do so, and yet He made a way for all of us to be forgiven and restored to relationship with Him.

But there is light

The Bible tells us: “The true light, which gives light to everyone, was coming into the world. He was in the world, and the world was made through him, yet the world did not know him. … But to all who did receive him, who believed in his name, he gave the right to become children of God, who were born, not of blood nor of the will of the flesh nor of the will of man, but of God.” (John 1:9-13)

This light is Jesus Christ, who 2,000 years ago came to the creation he made and lived a perfect life. He was sacrificed on the cross to pay the penalty for our mistakes. All we need to do to be saved from the penalty of our sins is to believe that He came to save us and trust Him with our lives.

Someone to trust

Believing in Him is more than a transaction, though. He can give you something to hold onto in dark times. “God is our refuge and strength, a very present help in trouble.” (Psalm 46:1) While believing in God won’t save you from times of depression, He does provide hope in something unchanging -- Himself and His love for you. He can also guide medical professionals who have skills to help you with clinical depression.

The story of believing in Jesus has been stated like this: Even when strength fails, there is perseverance. And even when perseverance fails, there is hope. And even when hope fails, there is love. And “love never fails.” (1 Corinthians 13:8)

Will you accept this light?
