God is Entitled

How many of us always feel and/or act like we are entitled to “have more” than we have already?

Written by GodLife on 05/01/2013

"Be thankful in all circumstances, for this is God’s will for you who belong to Christ Jesus. "(1 Thessalonians 5:18)

This month, my family tried to reach out to another family with whom we’ve been in conflict. We shared with them, hoping they would accept what we offered and be willing to give something in return, so we could make peace together. Instead, their attitude was one of entitlement: they felt that since we’d been willing to reach out, that we should give in to what we don’t believe is right. Their attitude seemed to say, “You gave; give more.”

Lack of Appreciation

How unappreciated we felt! Our willingness to make peace was useless. Despite Jesus telling us, “Blessed are the peacemakers” (Matthew 5:9) we did NOT feel very blessed! But our experience made me think: how many of us always feel and/or act like we are entitled to “have more” than we have already? Many of the poor throughout the world envy the rich. But God tells us, “Better the little that the righteous have than the wealth of many wicked” (Psalms 37:16) Many of the wealthy throughout the world jealously gather more material possessions or worldly status. But God tells us that “People, despite their wealth, do not endure” (Psalms 49:12)

Do We Act Entitled to God?

If my sinful, human family were upset by someone expecting us to give more than we had already, how much more upset must our perfect Father be – when we humans act entitled to more of Himself than He has already provided? The Bible tells us that “God loved the world so much that He gave His one and only Son, so that everyone who believes in Him will not perish but have eternal life” (John 3:16). As believers in Christ, “since we are [God’s] children, we are His heirs” (Romans 8:17). But are we spoiled children – or loving, grateful heirs? Do we ever stop to appreciate the bounty of love God has given, or do we just ask for more worldly items?

God Is Entitled to Our All

Sin destroys our relationship with God. But God offered Himself, in the life of His Son, for reconciliation. He hopes that people will accept His gift and will give something in return, so that we can have peace together. What should we give? The Apostle Paul told the Roman Christians to "offer every part of yourself to Him"(Romans 6:13). He taught us that "living means living for Christ. If I live, I can do more fruitful work for Christ"(Philippians 1:21) So what can you do; what gifts has God given you? Put them to work for Him. Share as He has shared with you; "Give as freely as you have received!"(Matthew 10:8)

And don’t forget: before acting like we deserve “more,” we should thank our generous Father for the many blessings He has already given!

Pray this week:

To thank God for all His blessings.

The "entitlement mentality" is permeating our culture. How can you guard against thinking you deserve more and more when you should be thankful for God's many blessings? What are your thoughts on this?
