How Can You Doubt Your Doubts?

The beauty of doubting your doubts is that it strengthens your beliefs.

Sanctify them in the truth; your word is truth.

John 17:17

The world we live in is constantly changing, evolving, and even digressing at times. We have seen the concept of truth fluctuate greatly. We then begin to dwell on the question: How can truth change? When the world constantly shows us that the truth is always changing, we begin to doubt if there even is any truth, and that is OK. But, instead of forever sitting in our doubts, let’s doubt our doubts!

Having Doubts

Humans doubt. It is simply something we do and will continue to do. Having doubts is not wrong, because there is uncertainty in the world. This means that there is the opportunity to gain certainty. How can we gain certainty? We doubt our doubts. This is a healthy process, because it allows us to keep grappling with the things that are not sitting right with us. Most times, constantly revisiting our doubts allows us to see a pattern of truth.

Pinpointing the Cause of Our Doubts

Where do our doubts come from? Doubts arise when we cannot see the truth of something. Now, as Christians, we know that God is our truth. He is the unchanging Truth that humanity craves for. So, if we know God to be our truth, then why do we still have doubts? Well, this is because we sometimes place our beliefs in things we think are God. These things can be our own desires. As humans with our limited knowledge, we tend to confuse what we think is best with what God knows to be best. When we doubt God’s provision, we are not doubting the undeniable fact that God provides for His children, we are doubting that God is providing how we see fit. Not only should we doubt this, we should not believe it. So, when analyzing our doubts, we need to look at what we are truly doubting.

Legitimizing Our Faith

God does not provide in ways that we see fit; He provides in ways He sees fit. Isaiah 55:9 says, “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts.” This verse shows us why it is better that God provides as He sees fit rather than how we do. So, when we are doubting the truth, analyze if it is the truth of God or simply our own human desires. Once that is dealt with, we can redirect our attention toward God’s truth. Christ's coming was predicted by Scripture without failure. By coming, living the perfect life, dying the sacrificial death that was predicted, and then rising from the dead, which He promised to do, Christ authenticated Scripture for all time. We have assurance in Scripture, so we can turn to it when in doubt. Allow God’s true word to reveal to you the truth and “the truth shall make you free” (John 8:32).

Pray this week:

Dear Lord, I come to you with open arms; reveal to me Your truth.  I lay my doubts at Your feet. I trust in Your word and I trust that it is true. Strengthen me and build me into a confident believer. Let me focus on You and You alone! Lord, thank you for providing clarity, wisdom, and truth. Amen.
