The Most Amazing Birth Ever

Christmas

Written by Gary Fleetwood on 05/12/2017

And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn.

Luke 2:7

The virgin birth of Jesus Christ has to be the most amazing birth ever, but there seems to be very little information about it given in the Scriptures. It is really fascinating to think about the fact that in Luke 2:7 the actual birth of Jesus Christ is described with these very simple words, "And she gave birth to her firstborn son and wrapped him in swaddling cloths and laid him in a manger, because there was no place for them in the inn."

Wow! One of the most important events of eternity, and just a few words to describe it. In fact, the New Testament simply does not spend a lot of time describing the birth of Jesus Christ. However, it does spend a great deal of time looking back at His virgin birth and interpreting for us what it means. Beyond the gospel record, the Scriptures do not talk about shepherds, a star, wise men, Joseph, or his wife Mary. They do not talk about Bethlehem and a stable. What they talk about is the significance of the birth of this little baby.

If this little baby who was born in a stable to a poor peasant girl is really God, then what do we know about Him?

Well, without going into great detail, there are seven amazing facts spoken about this little child in Hebrews 1:1-3 and about His being God. He was not an ordinary baby. These verses give us great insight into who was being born in the stable in Bethlehem.

"Long ago, at many times and in many ways, God spoke to our fathers by the prophets, but in these last days he has spoken to us by his Son, whom he appointed the heir of all things, through whom also He created the world. He is the radiance of the glory of God and the exact imprint of his nature, and he upholds the universe by the word of his power. After making purification for sins, he sat down at the right hand of the Majesty on high." (Hebrews 1:1-3)

The following is what God is saying about His son being born in a manger. He is saying that Jesus is the “heir of all things” and that He is the One who “created the world”. He is saying that His Son radiates and displays “the glory of God” and is the “exact” representation of the Father. He is saying that Jesus “upholds the universe by the word of His power”. He is saying that this baby is the one who made the sacrifice for our sins that God accepts and that now Jesus Christ is seated at the right hand of God the Father waiting to come back and reign on the earth. That is who God is saying this little baby in the manger actually was. This is our confession...this little baby is Lord over all things.

So, how does this virgin birth actually impact my life?

Well, the answer to that is simple. God had to become like us so that He could actually die for us as a sacrifice for sin. He was the only One who could make this sacrifice. The Son of God had to be born so that He could actually “become for sin for us”. It is amazing to think that this little child who lived a perfect life was crucified as a criminal on a cross, but is actually the Creator of the universe. Philippians 2:9-11 says, "Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name, so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under the earth, and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father."

When He was in this world He had nothing, but one day everything and everyone will bow to Him. This is not just another man or some kind of angel. Jesus Christ is the Creator of and heir of everything. He is the One who created everything out of nothing. Colossians 1:16-17 says this, "For by him all things were created, in heaven and on earth, visible and invisible, whether thrones or dominions or rulers or authorities—all things were created through him and for him. And he is before all things, and in him all things hold together."

One day in the future Jesus Christ will take complete control and rule over all that exists.

He will return one day as King of Kings and Lord of Lords to exercise His complete rule over the entire universe. He will cleanse it and create a new heaven and a new earth in which He will reign as the mighty God over His creation. Jesus Christ, the little baby in a manger, is the One who made everything and who made the sacrifice for our sins, and that is exactly why we worship Him at Christmas. We do not worship an event or a baby, but we worship the God of all creation, the God of eternity, and the God of our great salvation. May we join with the angels in heaven and worship our great King!

Pray this week:

Father, thank you so much for sending your amazing Son into the world so that I can enjoy the great salvation that you have provided through His sacrifice. I express my deep love and gratitude to you for your willingness to make such an incredible sacrifice. Thank you for what Christmas really means!

If God was willing to make such a great sacrifice for me, am I willing to become a “living sacrifice” for Him (Romans 12:1)?
